Milia Removal / Extraction Christchurch
Safe & Professional Milia Removal
Milia are one of the most common skin concerns we see in the salon. These tiny white bumps can be difficult to remove yourself and often remain for months or even years without changing.
At Refined Skin And Beauty, we provide professional milia extraction using sterile, single-use equipment in a clean, private, and relaxing environment.
Every treatment begins with a thorough skin consultation to determine whether the milia are suitable for cosmetic extraction and to ensure the most appropriate treatment approach for your skin.
Our goal is to remove suitable milia safely and gently while minimising unnecessary trauma to the surrounding skin.

What Are Milia?
Milia are small, superficial keratin-filled cysts that develop when keratin becomes trapped beneath the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis). They appear as firm, white or yellowish bumps, usually measuring 1–2 mm in diameter.
Unlike acne, milia are not caused by excess oil, bacteria, or clogged pores. Because they are enclosed beneath the surface of the skin, they cannot usually be removed by squeezing or using acne products.
Milia most commonly develop around the eyes, cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin, although they can occur anywhere on the face.
What Causes Milia?
Milia form when dead skin cells become trapped beneath the skin instead of naturally shedding from the surface.

Several factors may contribute to their development, including:
• Natural skin renewal processes
• Sun damage
• Age-related changes in skin turnover
• Heavy or highly occlusive skincare products
• Skin trauma following cosmetic procedures or injury
• Certain skin conditions
• Genetic predisposition

Although milia are completely harmless, they often require professional extraction once fully formed.
Treatment may not be recommended if you have:

• Active skin infections
• Cold sores in the treatment area
• Open wounds
• Inflamed acne directly surrounding the milia
• Certain skin conditions where extraction is not appropriate

A consultation will always be carried out before treatment to ensure it is suitable for your skin.
Who May Not Be Suitable?
Aftercare
Following your treatment we recommend:

• Avoid touching the treated area unnecessarily.
• Keep the skin clean.
• Avoid exfoliating acids, retinol, or other active skincare products for 48 –72 hours if advised.
• Apply sunscreen daily.
• Follow the personalised aftercare advice provided by your therapist.

Any temporary redness usually settles within a short period, depending on your individual skin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is milia extraction painful?
Most clients describe the treatment as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. The sensation is usually brief, and every effort is made to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure.
Can all milia be removed?
In most cases, yes. Many milia can be successfully removed during professional treatment. However, whether a milia can be extracted depends on its size, depth, location, maturity, and your individual skin condition.
During your consultation, we will carefully assess your skin and determine whether the milia are suitable for extraction. Occasionally, some milia may require additional time before they are ready for safe removal, or more than one treatment may be recommended.
Will the milia come back?
Once a particular milia has been successfully removed, it usually does not return. However, new milia may develop over time if your skin is naturally prone to them.
Can I remove milia at home?
We do not recommend attempting to remove milia yourself. Because milia are enclosed beneath the skin, squeezing or picking can damage the surrounding tissue and increase the risk of infection or scarring.
Is there any downtime?
Most clients experience only mild redness immediately after treatment, which usually settles within a few hours or by the following day. Depending on the number, size, and depth of the milia treated, a small spot or tiny scab may form as the skin heals.
Healing varies from person to person, but in most cases the treated area recovers within approximately 1–2 days. Your therapist will provide personalised aftercare advice to support the healing process and help achieve the best possible outcome.
