Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage: The Ultimate Relief for Muscle Tension and Pain

Deep tissue massage is a powerful and effective therapy designed to target chronic muscle tension, tightness, and deep-seated pain. Unlike a traditional relaxation massage, deep tissue techniques work on the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue to help break up knots, improve mobility, and promote overall healing. This massage is particularly beneficial for athletes, individuals with physically demanding jobs, or those who suffer from chronic pain conditions.

Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

Relieves Chronic Pain and Tension

Deep tissue massage helps release muscle knots and tight areas, making it highly effective for conditions such as lower back pain, neck stiffness, and shoulder tension.

Improves Mobility and Flexibility

By breaking down adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue), deep tissue massage enhances muscle flexibility and range of motion, reducing stiffness.

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

While deep tissue massage is more intense than a traditional relaxation massage, it still promotes relaxation by reducing cortisol (the stress hormone) and increasing serotonin and dopamine, which boost mood and well-being.

Speeds Up Recovery After Injury

Whether you’re recovering from a sports injury or dealing with postural issues, deep tissue massage helps improve blood circulation, reducing inflammation and promoting faster healing.

Lowers Blood Pressure and Improves Circulation

By increasing blood flow and reducing tension in muscles, deep tissue massage can help lower blood pressure and improve overall circulation, supporting better oxygen and nutrient delivery to tissues.

What to Expect During a Deep Tissue Massage

Consultation & Preparation
Your therapist will discuss your specific concerns, pain points, and any injuries or conditions you may have. This helps them tailor the session to your needs.

Application of Firm Pressure
The therapist will begin with gentle warm-up strokes before gradually applying deeper pressure to targeted areas. The movements may include slow, deep strokes, friction techniques, and kneading to break up tension.

Possible Discomfort in Tense Areas
Some areas may feel slightly tender due to built-up tension. It's important to communicate with your therapist so they can adjust the pressure to a level that is both effective and comfortable.

Post-Massage Care
After the massage, you may experience mild soreness, similar to post-workout stiffness. Staying hydrated and allowing your body time to recover will enhance the benefits.

Contraindications for Deep Tissue Massage: When to Avoid or Modify Treatment

Deep tissue massage is an effective therapy for relieving muscle tension and chronic pain, but it is not suitable for everyone. Certain medical conditions may require caution, modification, or complete avoidance of deep tissue massage.

Absolute Contraindications (Massage Should Be Avoided)

  • Osteoporosis or fragile bones – Deep pressure may cause fractures.

  • Blood clotting disorders (e.g., deep vein thrombosis, hemophilia) – Massage can dislodge clots, increasing the risk of complications.

  • Recent surgeries or injuries – Healing tissues are vulnerable and may be damaged by deep pressure.

  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure – Deep massage can temporarily raise blood pressure.

  • Varicose veins – Applying deep pressure can cause irritation or damage.

  • Inflammatory conditions in acute flare-ups (e.g., arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia) – Massage may worsen inflammation and discomfort.

  • Skin infections or conditions (e.g., open wounds, burns, cellulitis, contagious skin diseases) – Massage could spread infection or aggravate the skin.

  • Cancer (especially if undergoing chemotherapy or radiation) – Massage can affect circulation and may need to be modified.

  • Fever, flu, or other infections – Massage may worsen symptoms and spread illness.

  • Recent heart attack, stroke, or serious cardiovascular conditions – Massage affects circulation and may pose risks.

Relative Contraindications (Massage May Be Modified or Require Doctor’s Approval)

  • Diabetes with nerve damage or circulation issues – Reduced sensation may lead to unintentional injury.

  • Neurological disorders (e.g., multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, stroke history) – Massage should be adapted based on symptoms.

  • Pregnancy (especially high-risk cases) – Prenatal massage is recommended instead of deep tissue techniques.

  • Chronic pain conditions (e.g., fibromyalgia, myofascial pain syndrome) – Deep pressure should be adjusted to avoid triggering pain.

  • Autoimmune diseases (e.g., lupus, rheumatoid arthritis) – Some conditions require a gentler approach.

Before booking a deep tissue massage, consult with a doctor if you have any medical conditions that could be affected by the treatment. Always inform your therapist of any health concerns to ensure a safe and effective experience.

See What Our Amazing Clients Say About Us

For many years I regularly visited a well respected spa in Christchurch until it recently closed for business which actually turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to me! Ruby owns and runs a well appointed home based beauty therapy clinic Refined Skin and Beauty and has introduced me to LED light therapy facial treatments, sonophoresis skin fusion treatments, dermafrac treatments; treatments i had never experienced before and all with a consultative professionalism, warmth and kindness and importantly great results! I have no hesitation in
recommending Ruby for a relaxing skin enhancing experience. I visit Ruby regularly (skin treatments are a commitment) and I love the glowing skin results. Plus she stocks ASAP and Aspect products. I am grateful to have Ruby as my skin therapist.
